Lane gambling house was on the same scale.

The two houses were not conducted in secrecy,

They had been opened so long that most people in Hong-Kong

knew of them. The Cheung Hing Street House which Lan Chi

kept was open during the same hours at the house that I ma-

naged in Wa Lane.

I was able to keep my house in Wa Lane open

because I bribed the Police,

I kept a list of the bribes I paid and the

names of the persons I paid them to.

The list produced (List H.) is the list of

persons to whom I paid bribes.

I know the Inspector present. It is Inspector

Quincey. He is an Inspector in the Police. I do not know in

what capacity he acts. He is called by some Chinese M: Chữ

tsai (Little black pig) and by others Quincey.

His name is on the list. It is the item on

page 1 of H "Kwan 3". This means that on the 1st. 2na, &3rd.

days of the 1st.moon of the Chinese New Year I paid $3 each

day to P. S. (190) Tang Chung to be paid to Quincey. P. S. Tang

Chung was in the Hong-Kong Police.

This item under the heading "Mo Tsing" (No

grace) means that the recipient did not forego his bribe on

the 1st. three days of the Chinese New Year like most of the

Chinese did.
